Learn More about an Insurance Claims Appraisal

What is an Insurance Claim APPRAISAL?

The Appraisal Process is also known as Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Basically, what it means is that if you do not agree with the amount the insurance company is paying you for your loss, you have the right to dispute that amount and proceed with the Appraisal Process. It can also be viewed as an alternative to lawsuits, since a lawyer does not need to be retained in order to proceed with this process.

The appraisal process can quickly resolve any kind of property damage:

All without going to litigation, which could get expensive.

Before the appraisal process can begin, policyholders can make a written demand to kickstart the appraisal process.

Assuming that both sides agree to the appraisal, each side will then select an independent appraiser and notify each other of the appraiser’s identity within 20 days of receipt of the written demand.

The two appraisers will then choose an umpire and if they cannot agree on an umpire within 15 days that choice can be made by the judge of the district court or judicial district. The appraisers will then proceed to set the amount of loss, separately stating the actual cash value and loss of each item.

In short, the umpire is a third appraiser who steps in if both the homeowner’s appraiser and insurance company’s appraiser does not agree on the loss value.

How do I know appraisal is the right process for me?

If you are in a position that you have a difficult claim that needs resolution, then appraisal can save you work for your money and time.

What is the key to a successful insurance appraisal?

The only way for an appraisal to be successful, and ensure the best possible result, make sure to hire an expert. An expert is knowledgeable of the entire appraisal process, and knows all of the ins and outs of the claims process. The expert will know how to choose the right umpire and how to communicate with the opposing appraiser throughout the process. This expert knowledge and powerful relationships is the most important factor for a successful insurance property appraisal.

Furthermore, a good appraiser must be a great negotiator who will come to an appropriate agreement with the other appraiser and umpire. The appraisal process can be a great tool for settling property claims disputes. If it’s not done right, the insurance company will have the advantage and you won’t be compensated for your damage.

In the end keep in mind that if the appraisal it’s not properly executed, it can lead to future claim problems, and results can be costly.
